Should I empty drawers before moving?

Should I emtpy my drawers before moving is one of the questions we get asked most often.

Likely yes, though, it depends.

Considerations to keep in mind when deciding to keep items in drawers or pack them separately:

  1. Is furniture sturdy enough? Drawers are heavy when filled with clothing. Are your drawers & furniture sturdy enough to support the weight of the clothes during the move? Typically solid wood furniture is, MDF isn’t.
  2. Will it be too heavy? If the furniture is strong enough, will it be too heavy to handle during your move? Particularly if you have tricky stairs at your current location or in your new one then for heavy furniture it is best to pack your items separately.
  3. Remove fragile items: If you have delicate or breakable items in your drawers, please remove them and pack them separately to prevent damage. We may need to lift your funiture on its side to safely move it and don’t want anything inside getting damaged.
  4. Secure the drawers: To prevent drawers from sliding open during transit, you can use tape or plastic wrap to secure them shut. This will help keep your clothes from falling out or getting wrinkled. Don’t worry about this if you work with us, we will wrap furniture with blankets and take care of this.
